Michael, who was born in Scotland and brought up in Surrey, studied pure mathematics at Oxford and was a keen rugby player, becoming an Oxford blue. With the start of the Second World War his education was disrupted, and after six years in the Royal Horse Artillery in Armoured Divisions, including the Desert Rats, he returned to Britain to face a choice either return to Oxford to continue with my studies and develop an academic career, or do something different. The something different was to become a studio manager and newsreader with the BBC in Bush House, working mainly for the European service. Digital UK London Countdown - News Report
News report on London Tonight concerning the Digital UK launch of the year countdown until the London region's analogue service is switched off. TV presenter Christine Bleakley was in the pink as she marked the countdown to the digital TV switchover at the birthplace of television - Alexandra Palace. The historic landmark was turned bright pink from 4-6th April to celebrate a year until the analogue television signal is officially turned off, leaving digital as the only option from April 4, 2012 onwards. The Palace's bright pink TV tower, the venue from which the world's first regular, public, high-definition television broadcast began in 1936, could be seen for miles around. The switchover, which requires viewers to convert any old analogue TV sets before next year's deadline, will provide an extended Freeview service in a range of widescreen and interactive options. A report by ITV London about the Digital Switchover. Phrase 1 begins with BBC2 switchoff on 4 April 2012. Phrase 2 other channels switch off on 18 April2012 Transmitted: 5th April 2011 This film footage is from the Archive Collection held and administered by the Alexandra Palace Television Society. ~ APTS ~ Preserving the televisual past for the digital future www.apts.org.uk

London Riots coverage | Day 3 | SKY NEWS | 8th August 2011 | HD
Sporadic violence has broken out in several parts of London as shops are looted and police are attacked in a third day of civil disorder - and there has also been unrest in Birmingham. The latest disturbances in the capital were centred around Hackney in east London, and Lewisham, Peckham and Croydon in the south. Clapham also fell victim to rioting, with rows of shops on Lavender Hill attacked. Prime Minister David Cameron is to return to London overnight in the wake of the unrest and will chair a meeting of the Government's emergency committee Cobra on Tuesday. And Britain's most senior police officer has called on parents to contact their children as he urged the public to clear London's streets. Acting Scotland Yard Commissioner Tim Godwin criticised another wave of "gratuitous" violence as he appealed directly to families to help officers bring the situation under control. news.sky.com news.sky.com Copyright ©2011 BskyB

Alexandra Palace Fire - 1980 - BBC News Report
BBC News report on the devistating fire at Alexandra Palace on 10th July 1980. This report was filmed a few days later while Firemen from the London Fire Brigade were still dampening down. Featured in this video are Leslie Mitchell (senior male television announcer), and a representative from the London Borough of Haringey. You can clearly see the devistation as a result of the fire, which destroyed the majority of the former Victorian pleasure palace. The theatre and television studios were saved from the fire, although the dressing rooms behind the stage in the theatre were destroyed. At the time of the fire the Open University were still producing television programmes in the studios and the staff were evacuated upon the first sightings of a fire in the great hall. Open University television production was moved to a purpose built complex at Milton Keynes the following year. This film footage is from the Archive Collection held and administered by the Alexandra Palace Television Society. www.apts.org.uk ~ APTS ~ Preserving the televisual past for the digital future
